Many people think it’s impossible to optimize your light environment in the modern world whilst working a 9-5 job. Not true. Here’s a list of light hacks you can implement:
- get up at sunrise, eat breakfast, and do whatever you can outside
- use orange/red blue light blockers, candles, red lamps, screen filters, etc., outside of sunlight hours
- do any form of movement/training outside
- drive with window(s) down on your way to work, or better yet, ride a bicycle to work
- try to move your office desk close to a window and open the window(s)
- use f.lux / Iris on your computer screen to reduce the blue light peaks
- use yellow-tinted blue light blockers if you’re unable to get natural light in from opening a window
- try your best to outside for 5min for the UVA rise (see the Circadian app for when that is at your location)
- take your phone calls outside; there are bonus points for doing it while walking
- start a trend of having staff meetings outside instead of inside
- eat your lunch outside, with as much skin in the game as possible
- take light breaks like people take smoke breaks; it will make you more productive anyway (you can set light break alarms in the Circadian app)
- drive home with windows down
- ask your work if it’s possible to work from home, even if it’s just a day a week (it makes all the difference as you can completely shift your work environment to outside)
- if it’s still light outside when you’re home from work, get outside, eat dinner outside, or walk outside
- prioritize weekends for getting lots of sunlight / outdoor time
- take the occasional sick day from work and enjoy a day of doing nothing but solar maxxing
- use an infrared light panel for times it’s hard to get outside
- work on a side hustle that you’re passionate about so you can run your own show // work from wherever you want
- quit your job and find a new outdoor one if it’s detrimental to your health; money isn’t everything
This is a lot of the stuff I tell my clients to do. These little light hacks make all the difference since they all add up. Understand that it’s about doing the best you can. No one is perfect, and awareness is key. It makes you 99% better than everyone else.
It’s easy to point fingers at other people who have made many sacrifices to relocate or change career paths to optimize their light environment and live their best lives.
Less focus on others, more focus on you.
Do the best YOU can with the situation YOU are currently in.
I was fortunate enough that my old job was outside. However, I would sometimes work long hours (12+ hrs) and shift work / on-call, working up to 16 hrs in a single shift. I was also working on live electricity up to 22,000 volts, so I was constantly around non-native EMF. Again — doing the best you can is key. Everyone’s situation is unique.
If you’re aware of the benefits of optimizing your light environment to yield optimal health, then you are doing better than so most people. Focus on which light hacks you can implement right now.
